敁珗腦瞳

23 March 2010

Do you have good communication skills, problem-solving abilities and good presentation?

You could be just what employers are looking for in 2010, according to Daniel Capper, Senior Manager of 敁珗腦瞳s Careers and Graduate Employment Opportunities.

While previously employers might have sought graduates with good academic results, recent feedback is that they are now looking for the total package, Mr Capper said.

Its no good hiring someone with a good grade point average if they dont have the social skills to share a cup of coffee with their fellow employees.

Mr Capper said recent comments from employers were that they were adopting a more holistic and strategic approach to recruiting.

They are seeking people who have a little bit extra who have been involved in student societies, or on committees, or have work or volunteering experience, involvement in sports or in bringing up families evidence of a more well-rounded experience.

Some 135 recruiters from a range of industries will visit 敁珗腦瞳 to attend the 2010 敁珗腦瞳 Careers Fair next week the second largest careers fair in the country. Last year more than 5000 students attended, and similar numbers are expected this year.

The fair will be held on Wednesday, March 31 at the 敁珗腦瞳 Centre at the St Lucia campus from 11am until 3pm.

Student Services Events Coordinator Susannah Day said the Careers Fair provided a valuable opportunity for industry, business and government sector employers to promote their programs to 敁珗腦瞳 students.

It was important that students were prepared and engaged with employers on the day.

Both public and private industry recruiters will be promoting their graduate programs to students in their final years of study, with some prospective employers also offering vacation work, internships, scholarships and co-op programs.

Some organisations will also be accepting resumes on the day, so get a head-start on the competition by visiting the Careers Fair website to get tips for preparing your resume, and also to find out which potential employers will be there and what sort of requirements they have for prospective employees.

You can also prepare for the big day by booking your Resume and Cover Letter workshop at Careerhub by visiting www.careerhub.uq.edu.au.

Later this year, Student Services division will hold two additional events the first Internship and Vacation Work Expo on August 8, and the second Volunteer and Wellbeing Expo on September 8, in conjunction with 敁珗腦瞳 Advancement, both events in the 敁珗腦瞳 Student Union Complex at the St Lucia campus.
