ҹ’s Healthy Communities Research Centre has joined the local flood recovery effort by holding a ‘town and gown’ lunch seminar on the long-term recovery of people and their communities after the flood.
Held in conjunction with the Ipswich Chamber of Commerce & Industry, the free seminar will provide an opportunity to reflect on what has been learnt locally and globally about disaster recovery.
Guest Speakers Associate Professor Judith Murray from ҹ and Professor Richard Bryant from The University of New South Wales have extensive experience working with communities recovering from disasters.
Associate Professor Murray is a member of the Psychosocial Working Group for the ACT Alliance, an international peak body comprised of more than 100 member organisations around the world.
Professor Bryant has worked with communities following 9/11, Hurricane Katrina and the Victorian bushfires.
Healthy Communities Research Centre Director Professor Robert Bush said the Centre was proud to partner with the Ipswich Chamber of Commerce & Industry and provide attendees with the opportunity to reflect on the process of community recovery.
“In a disaster we are part of the global community yet in our own little part of the world,” he said.
“We can learn from each other by understanding disasters in communities and Ipswich has much to contribute to others in the global family.”
Ipswich Chamber of Commerce & Industry President Michael Munt said the Chamber remains committed to business recovery within Ipswich and surrounds following the floods through the ‘Shop Ipswich’ campaign.
“Our partnership with the Healthy Communities Research Centre and The Ipswich Study Seminar Series further demonstrates the Chamber’s commitment to flood recovery,” he said.
The seminar, scheduled for the 12th of May, is the first for 2011 in a seminar series supported by The Ipswich Study, a long term health research program developed by the Healthy Communities Research Centre.
Financial assistance for the study has been provided by ҹ and a number of local organisations including the Ipswich Hospital Foundation.
